Contemporary Living Solutions (CLS) was founded in 2012 by David Smith, a very seasoned member of the Territory construction industry, with over 40 years experience. CLS was established as Dave was keen to trial and test a new building concept he had developed to overcome the additional costs incurred when building elevated homes in comparison to ground level homes.
Changing the way elevated homes are built
The concept was to build elevated homes at ground level in modules avoiding the logistics of lifting all building materials and eliminate the safety issues of working at heights and the need for scaffolding. To enable the homes to be lifted securely and to give clear access to the base of the modules, Dave also developed a technique to lift the house modules by hidden roof appendages. This made it easier to accurately place and fix the modules onto the pre-prepared columns.
Improving Thermal Performance results
Continually looking for improvements, Dave's next strategy was to address eco-friendly and economical living. In conjunction with Thermal Performance Assessor, Ray Fogolyan from NT Property Services, homes in the planning stages are evaluated to achieve the best possible "home star rating". Homes in the NT must reach a 5 - 6 star rating at a minimum. CLS Homes achieves 7.2 stars as a minimum creating comfortable living and reducing running costs for new home owners.
History as an innovator
Not one to accept traditional or typical methods as the only way, Dave developed a screwless roofing fixing system while in the metal fabrication industry for which he still holds the Australian/Global patent. Another example of his inventiveness was demonstrated while personally training for the Australian Dragon Boat National titles; Dave developed a rowing module to correct rowing techniques for his team, and yes they took out the national title, the first year they competed.
Passion and pride
If you ever have a chance to chat with Dave you will know he is passionate about creating homes for families at an affordable price. He thrives on producing an immaculate product with attention to detail and workmanship so his team of tradesmen includes his son Lachie and a number of trusted employees so as to preserve his standards of quality.
